How Office Cleanliness Shapes Your Business Image

7 seconds: the first impression you can’t undo

Research in social psychology shows that people form a first impression within 7 seconds. Seven seconds. That’s how long it takes a client to walk through the door, glance left and right, and decide, consciously or not, what they think of your business.

So ask yourself: what does your client see in those 7 seconds?

Three scenarios: what your client actually experiences

Scenario A: the “fine” office
The client walks in. The floor looks okay. There are coffee cups from the morning on the reception desk. The bathroom isn’t terrible, but it isn’t pleasant either. They won’t say anything, but a question has already crossed their mind: “If this is how they treat their own office, how will they treat my project?”

Scenario B: the problem office
An odd smell hangs in the air. The bin by the entrance is overflowing. The meeting room still has leftovers from an earlier session: cups, crumbs, napkins. The client says nothing, but they’re already looking for an excuse to cut the meeting short.

Scenario C: the office that signals professionalism
Everything gleams. A pleasant, subtle scent. The reception desk is clean, the meeting room is ready, the bathroom is hotel-grade. The client doesn’t think about cleaning at all. They simply feel they’re in the right place. And that’s exactly the point.

What actually shapes your image

Most people think image equals a clean floor. But it goes well beyond that:

Smell. The first thing people notice. The smell of harsh cleaning chemicals, kitchen odors, a musty smell: each one sends a message. A clean, neutral smell reads as professionalism.

Bathrooms. This is the real test. A client who walks into a dirty bathroom won’t forget it. That’s the detail people talk about afterward.

Kitchen / coffee corner. Coffee stains on the counter, teaspoons in the sink, a fridge covered in magnets and old notices: it all adds up to an impression of disorder.

Glass and partitions. Fingerprints on glass partitions look awful in natural light. And in an open-plan office, everyone sees them.

Plants. Have artificial plants? If there’s a layer of dust on them, you’re better off without. A dusty plant says “nobody here pays attention to detail.”

The WeWork example

Ever wondered why shared workspaces like WeWork charge so much? A big chunk of that price goes to cleaning. WeWork cleans several times a day. Bathrooms are maintained hourly. Meeting rooms are reset after every session. The result: people feel they’re in a premium space, and that’s worth money to them.

You don’t need to be WeWork. But you can borrow the principle: consistent, high-quality cleaning equals an image that sells.

What does image cost? Less than you’d think

Professional cleaning for a mid-size office runs 1,500-2,500 ₪ a month. That’s less than you spend on coffee for your staff. The difference? Coffee won’t change the mind of the client walking in. A gleaming floor will.
