Why office carpet cleaning matters more than you think
What’s hiding inside your office carpet
The carpet looks clean? Maybe on top. But down inside the fibers there’s a whole world: dust, dust mites (the ones that trigger allergies), food crumbs, bacteria, and particles that have soaked in over months. A regular vacuum pulls out maybe 50-60% of the dirt. The rest stays deep down and keeps building up.
This isn’t only about looks. A dirty carpet hurts your air quality. Every step on it kicks particles back up into the air, and they go straight into people’s lungs. For anyone with asthma or allergies, that’s a real problem.
3 cleaning methods, and what each one does
| Method | What it does | Best for | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vacuuming | Removes dust and dry dirt from the top layer | Routine upkeep | Every cleaning (2-5 times a week) |
| Shampooing | Lifts out stains and soaked-in dirt, freshens the color | Stains, odor, refresh | Once every 3-6 months |
| Steam cleaning | Deep sanitizing that kills bacteria, dust mites, and mold | Deep clean, allergies | Once every 6-12 months |
So what’s the right approach? A combination of all three. Routine vacuuming, a shampoo every quarter, and steam once or twice a year. That keeps the carpet clean, healthy, and looking like new.
How often you should clean an office carpet
It comes down to two things: how many people walk on the carpet, and where it sits.
Entrance / main walkway carpet:
- Vacuuming: daily
- Shampooing: every one to two months
- Steam: every 3 months
Carpet in a work area (around desks):
- Vacuuming: 2-3 times a week
- Shampooing: every 3-4 months
- Steam: every 6 months
Conference room carpet:
- Vacuuming: 1-2 times a week
- Shampooing: every 4-6 months
- Steam: once a year
Signs your carpet needs a professional clean
- Color change. If the carpet near the wall looks lighter than the carpet in the middle of the room, the dirt has already changed its color.
- Odor. A carpet that smells is a carpet that needs shampooing. Or steam. Or both.
- Allergies. Staff sneezing more? Red eyes? A dirty carpet could be the cause.
- Set-in stains. A coffee stain that’s been there for two months? Vacuuming won’t touch it. You need a professional shampoo.
