Cleaning a New Office
A new office? Hold on, there’s work to do before you move in
Here’s a classic mistake. A company signs a lease on a new office, the contractor hands over the key, and everyone starts hauling in boxes. A week later, someone notices dust on every surface, a sticky floor, and a kitchen that’s anything but clean.
It happens because “new office” doesn’t mean “clean office”. Even after a renovation, construction dust gets into everything. And even if the place was simply shut for a few months, dust, grime, and stale air do their work.
A cleaning checklist before moving into a new office
Here’s what to clean before a single box comes through the door:
Floors:
- A thorough wash, including corners and under anything that can be moved
- Polish or wax for tile or stone surfaces
- Carpet cleaning if there’s carpet, ideally before the furniture goes in
Walls and ceiling:
- Wiping down dust, especially after a renovation
- Removing stains and leftover adhesive from masking tape
Windows:
- Cleaning inside and out
- Cleaning sills and frames
Air conditioners:
- Cleaning the filters (they’re probably full of dust)
- Disinfecting the indoor units
Restrooms and kitchen:
- Full disinfection: toilets, sinks, taps, countertops
- Cleaning cabinets inside before you load in equipment
Electrical and lighting:
- Wiping light fixtures and panels
- Cleaning outlets and switches
On moving day: cleaning in real time
Moving day itself is chaos. Cartons, movers, furniture arriving and getting assembled. A few things worth knowing:
Protecting the floors: lay down covers along the main traffic routes. Boxes and wheeled pallets scratch floors.
Ongoing cleaning through the day: someone needs to empty packaging, clear away plastic wrap, and keep the walkways open. That’s not a job for your staff.
Final cleaning: at the end of moving day, a thorough clean. Wash the floors, wipe down every surface, sort the trash. That way, the first “real” day starts with everything ready.
The first week: a cleaning routine from day one
The most important tip: don’t put off setting up a cleaning routine. That first week, everything is still settling. Furniture keeps arriving, boxes get unpacked, dust builds up. Daily cleaning in the first week helps “reset” the office and start clean.
After the first week, you switch to the regular schedule. How many times a week? It depends on the size of the office and the number of staff. We’ll help you build a plan that fits.
